Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration has over 425 different animal species on site! |
Exhibits
Exhibits represent a major part of Sea Research Foundation’s efforts to inform the public about marine animals, the habitats that support them, and the historical and scientific significance of deep sea exploration. Each Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration display is the result of a collaborative effort among the departments of Husbandry, Exhibits, Research, Education, Facility Operations, and Information Technology. Throughout the facility, there are 70 exhibits with over 12,000 fishes, invertebrates, and marine mammals, representing 425 species from around the world.
The exhibit development process starts with a review of the natural history and biology of each species to be displayed so that necessary life support systems can be designed and appropriate husbandry practices can be employed. Plumbing, electrical, and carpentry plans are developed as an integral part of creating an appropriate setting for the animals. An educational message is developed and checked for accuracy and ease of understanding before it is turned into final text and graphics to accompany the live display. The end result is an engaging exhibit that is visually appealing and effectively communicates the beauty, wonder, and fascination of the marine world.
